Solar Fest weekend

SolarFest

SolarFest

This is the 15th year for SolarFest, at the Forget-me-not farm in Tinmouth, VT. It was a weekend dedicated to renewable energy, sustainability, and a general celebration for the sun. After 4 weeks of almost continuous rain, it was a great weekend to be out and appreciating the sun!

There were lots of tents with vendors selling solar panels, wind and water turbines, geothermal systems, clothing, jewelry, food, lots of local goods, and there were a few people peddling their perpetual motion machines.

Wind Turbine

Wind Turbine

Today, I was in Portland, Maine in a training class for Southwest wind turbines – installation and sales. It was fun and interesting and gave me some good resources and information to help people who have enough wind to generate electricity.

We completed the construction of a 45′ tower, wired and attached the turbine, then raised the tower and leveled it. Pictures included.

Drying in the wind

Clothes pins

Clothes pins

At the Shaker Country Fair this weekend I found a product that I would like to make available at my store: Clothes pins printed with “The right to dry”.

There are a number of residential associations that don’t allow the home-owner to dry their clothes out in the air. Vermont just passed a law that will not allow associations or groups to restrict a person’s right to dry their clothes outdoors: “Vermonters win their right to dry”.

My dryer uses 2500 Watts for about 40 minutes to dry clothes. If I do 2 loads of laundry a week, thats 172,000 Watts every year just for the dryer ($25-30). More importantly it is electricity I don’t need to use and I get the added benefit of clean fresh smell and no shrinkage. I’m guessing there are people who really don’t have an option to dry their clothes outside… but it would be great to know that it can’t be restricted if you want to take advantage of this energy saving measure and help reduce your carbon footprint. Go Vermont!!

Green TED Talks

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. Once a year the TED conference brings together some of the worlds most ‘fascinating’ thinkers and gives them 18 minutes to speak on their subject of interest. More and more of them are focused on sustainability, renewable resources, and general green topics. Here are some of the recent talks that I really liked:

Shai Agassi talks about his bold plan for the electric car. He believes his company will be instrumental in created an oil-free car industry across the US by 2020. In his vision this can only happen with all electric cars (hybrids are not good enough) and renewable energy sources creating that electricity.

Renewable Energy Toys

Getting back to work after a great vacation can be difficult…so I decided I should ease in slowly and spend a little time researching toys for my store.

There are a number of fun solar powered vehicles, and experimenter’s kits to help explain how solar energy can be converted to electricity. Here are a few. (Isn’t the solar powered wind turbine really just a solar powered fan?).

Wind power for the home

Something I found out recently – Jay Leno is very involved in alternative energy solutions. He has this enormous garage to house his collection of cars and antique steam engines. The garage is powered by wind and solar!

My cousin Kaelin sent me a link about a new wind turbine that uses magnetic levitation to allow the blades to rotate without friction. This is a house mountable device. Here is a video of Jay Leno talking to the manufacturer:  Jay Leno’s Garage

Here is a tree hugger review of a similar product.

Everwind Maglev wind turbine

Everwind Maglev wind turbine

The cool thing about this technology is that it addresses some of the biggest problems we have with harnessing the wind: the mechanical moving parts fail after a while, you need to mount traditional blades away from other structures, the amount of wind should be fairly constant and fairly high.

This mag-wind turbine will start turning with winds of only 5Mph and does not make noise.

I want one! As soon as I figure out how to be a distributor or rep, I’ll get some for my store.

I’m very excited about the new products we are starting to see now that the ‘green revolution’ is underway. Did you see Obama’s interview on CNBC last night? He stated that we need to ensure that the money spent on the economic stimulus package is spent wisely. Some examples he noted of good spending include: “making sure that we are doubling alternative energy, and creating much more efficiency in our buildings and in our transportation systems,…”

If you come across interesting links for alternative products, please send them to me or add them to the comments!  Thanks!
