SolarFest Workshop, 2011

SolarFest - New England Renewable Energy Festival

Solarfest was a lot of fun this year! I learn so much from the attendees and the other vendors. It is an important part of my renewable energy continuing education.

This year I learned about fixed magnet versus electromagnet motors (as used in wind or water turbines) and how to provide appropriate electrical circuits to support them. I learned a few more good uses for composting toilets and backyard garden composters based on what people are actually doing with these products. I got the answer to a question that one of my customer’s had about his grid-tied battery backup system that didn’t always sell all his solar power back to the grid. And I heard a few more interesting ways that people are making their own hot water batch heaters.

Merging Talents (& Stores!)

Clear Mountain Solar

Clear Mountain Solar

I’m very excited to announce the merging of two USA Solar Stores — Enfield Energy Emporium and Clear Mountain Solar in Claremont, NH! The last few weeks have been both fun and a bit stressful as we worked out the details of the transaction. Basically, “Energy Emporium” will be the parent company and both stores will continue to provide products and information to their communities with a focus on renewable energy products, conservation, efficiency, measurement and education.
Enfield Energy Emporium

Enfield Energy Emporium

Clear Mountain Solar has been in business for about 2 and half years and has proven that there is great interest and a market for these products. They bring great experience in both sales and installations. Energy Emporium opened up last April to provide similar services about 30 miles north of Claremont. Our expertise has been in business, marketing and communications. It’s great when you can join talents that complement each other!

Both stores were, and still are, members of the USA Solar Store buyers group. Over the next few weeks we will merge logos, websites, marketing materials and try to take advantage of combined inventory, sales, and advertising.

What is your idea for business success?

There is a very nice picture and story in the Upper Valley Life magazine that just came out: Sept/Oct 2009. I was really excited to be chosen as one of the four businesses they wanted to highlight for their article “The Secret to Success in Business“. Jon Gilbert Fox did a really nice job of the photo!

The article features two older businesses (more than 20 years) and two new businesses (less than 1 year). It is fun to read the opinions on the ‘secret’ to good business.

Having only been open for 6 months, I am not yet qualified to say what HAS BEEN successful for my business, but I know what I want to focus on in order to achieve success: Customer Service.

Solar Fest weekend

SolarFest

SolarFest

This is the 15th year for SolarFest, at the Forget-me-not farm in Tinmouth, VT. It was a weekend dedicated to renewable energy, sustainability, and a general celebration for the sun. After 4 weeks of almost continuous rain, it was a great weekend to be out and appreciating the sun!

There were lots of tents with vendors selling solar panels, wind and water turbines, geothermal systems, clothing, jewelry, food, lots of local goods, and there were a few people peddling their perpetual motion machines.

Community Energy Raiser

PAREII was recently introduced to a group in Plymouth, NH who are helping each other install solar thermal panels and solar PV (photovoltaic) panels on their homes. Just as “barn raisers” were neighbors helping each other raise a barn, “energy raisers” are neighbors helping each other install renewable energy systems.

Green TED Talks

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. Once a year the TED conference brings together some of the worlds most ‘fascinating’ thinkers and gives them 18 minutes to speak on their subject of interest. More and more of them are focused on sustainability, renewable resources, and general green topics. Here are some of the recent talks that I really liked:

Shai Agassi talks about his bold plan for the electric car. He believes his company will be instrumental in created an oil-free car industry across the US by 2020. In his vision this can only happen with all electric cars (hybrids are not good enough) and renewable energy sources creating that electricity.

15 Minutes of Fame

Valley News, Business

Valley News, Business

Andy Warhol said that in the future, everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame. Opening an alternative energy store in Enfield, NH has provided me with my 15 minutes.

I am collecting the media clips on the ‘Press‘ page of this website and hoping that the links will remain for a while. I chose this blog post to write about it because the USA Solar Store group and my store in particular, were given a nice article on the front of the Business section in the local paper this weekend. Here is the article: “Bright Idea” by Chris Fleisher, The Valley News. I think that Jackie Bender of channel 5 News also did a good job highlighting the educational aspect of the energy store. That clip can be found here: “New Store Offers Green Products“.

Ribbon Cutting

Ribbon Cutting

After months of planning the opening day has finally come and gone. It was a fun day with good weather, balloons, speeches, barbeque, product demonstrations, family, friends and lots of guests.

We had speeches from NH State Senator Matthew Houde, NH Congressman Chuck Townsend, County Commissioner Mike Cryans, Enfield Selectman John Kluge, Enfield Energy Committee representative, Bo Petersson, and USA Solar Store President, Dave Bonta. Also attending were Enfield Town Manager, Steve Schneider, and a number of representatives of the Enfield Village Association (EVA).

I thought I would use this blog for some pictures of the fun time and to say thanks to all my family and the many new Enfield friends I have made that have provided lots of good ideas, discussions, and good wishes.

Starting Up

Starting a business gives me the opportunity to think about everything from the hosting service to the website design to the accounting and blogging systems to the physical retail space.

One of my goals in starting up is to think about product and service choices in terms of energy consumption or affect on the environment. I don’t plan to change my lifestyle over night — I don’t think most people can or should do that. But by measuring and learning about energy consumption and our carbon footprint (the negative effect we have on the environment), we can choose to make noticeable improvements.

On the other hand, there are times when you do get to start new. The hot water tank needs to be replaced, for instance. Or you are building an addition to your house. These are great times to look into a solar-heated hot water tank or a solar panel to provide electricity.

One of the first things I purchased for this new business was a website hosting service. In two of my previous jobs I was responsible for the IT services of the company and I have walked through some impressive web hosting facilities. Racks and racks of electronic equipment that have to be kept at a very cool temperature. You walk into a place like that and can’t help but think about the electricity and air conditioning bills.

I was very happy to find there are quite a few hosting services whose power is supplied from renewable sources such as wind and solar – 100%. And many others that are offsetting their carbon emissions by paying into a system that funds renewable sources.

I also had a list of requirements for the kind of software that I want to be able to run, and of course, I would like to keep the monthly costs low.

After some searching, I found this site that summarizes a number of different green web hosting services: http://www.ecobusinesslinks.com/green_web_hosting.htm

I decided on “Sustainable Hosting” which is described as “an environmentally responsible hosting company that is powered by renewable wind energy”. I like their list of software applications, ease of use, and the cost is $10/mo. I am going to add their logo to the bottom of this website both to promote them and remind me (and others) that when there is a choice that is less expensive or similarly priced, we can choose to help save the planet.

Any green products or services that you have found lately?
