Solar Collector
The solar collector we are building at my future house, 78 Main St, has been in place for a couple of weeks now, and we have been collecting temperature data. I’m hoping to have some “live” data at the website at some point in the future, but for now I have downloaded 8 [...]

A friend and colleague of mine, Brad Vietje, is building a straw bale house and will be working with the same solar heated storage tank as I am using for 78 Main St. He, too, has a goal for net zero energy, with solar PV for electricity and using local and sustainable materials everywhere.
I [...]

There is a new document that has recently been published to provide ideas and advice for energy efficient improvements for historic buildings. This document, “Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Historic Preservation” is available from the “Clean Air Cool Planet” (CA-CP) website.
First a note about CA-CP. This is a non-profit organization whose mission is “Finding [...]

Solar Storage tank
Unfortunately we had a problem with the webcam and didn’t get any time-lapse pictures of the second day of building the solar storage tank (see Thermal storage tank, part 1 from the first day). We did get some video footage and a few stills, see below.
The first day was the [...]

Solar heat
For our zero-energy building we are using the sun to provide ALL of the heat we will need throughout the winter. After months of discussion, engineering models of heat requirements, heat losses, heat storage and solar heat generation… the team came up with a system. There are three major ingredients:
Solar collector
Thermal storage [...]

Bureaucracy
Ahhh… the bureaucracy of state and local permits. We are trying to build a net zero energy building (ZEB) with LEED certification (leadership in energy and environmental design) but we can’t start until we get all the right permits through all the right bureaucracies.
I thought it would be relatively easy to get a [...]

NorthWest foundation
We are still in the planning stage for 78 Main St renovation (seems like this stage is taking a loooong time), and this week we got a few more opinions on the stability (or fragility) of the foundation.
Since we are putting a lot of money into this building up front to make [...]

BTUs from the Sun
At the end of last week we had a good meeting with Murphy’s Cell-Tech, our energy consultant, who has done the thermal modeling for our house to determine the number of BTUs entering and leaving. The people involved in the model included experts in insulation, thermal seal of the building, [...]

78 Main, June 2009
78 Main St, Enfield, NH is the address of my family’s future home as well as my store’s new home. We would like this to be a model of energy efficiency; a place for people to get ideas for things they could implement in their own homes or new construction; and [...]

Mascoma River
78 Main St, Enfield, is our zero energy building project – the future home of the Enfield Energy Emporium and my family residence. The blogs that include ‘78 Main’ in the title document the design, construction, and progress of the renovation of a 150 year building to a zero or near-zero energy building. [...]
