What’s new in LED lighting

LED String

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. This is a lighting technology that we have seen for decades as little circles of light usually representing that a device is on… or, if the light is blinking maybe it means there is a problem or error. Green, red and yellow were the common colors and [...]

78 Main: LEED me home

78 Main, June 2009

78 Main St, Enfield, NH is the address of my family’s future home as well as my store’s new home. We would like this to be a model of energy efficiency; a place for people to get ideas for things they could implement in their own homes or new construction; and [...]

Amazing human power

Efficiency Chart

I love biking and I have been following the Tour de France for the last decade or so. Today was stage 17 of the 96th Tour de France. This race is an amazing display of human power. These riders can race 4 or 5 hours almost every day for 3 weeks. They get [...]

My Prius turns 100!

2002 Prius

I own a 2002 Toyota Prius, which I bought second hand in 2003. It had less than 8,000 miles on it and it was re-certified by the dealer. There had been only a few years of hybrid cars out on the street so I was concerned about whether they would hold up, what [...]

There were lots of tents with [...]

Drying off — again

Store flood

My store is in a multi-use building with apartments overhead. The other day the apartment above my store somehow developed a cracked toilet tank and it flooded my ceiling tiles, which probably held out for all of 5 minutes before many of them came down bringing a lot of water with them.

From [...]

Mascoma River

78 Main St, Enfield, is our zero energy building project – the future home of the Enfield Energy Emporium and my family residence. The blogs that include ‘78 Main’ in the title document the design, construction, and progress of the renovation of a 150 year building to a zero or near-zero energy building. [...]

Community Energy Raiser

I was recently introduced to a group in Plymouth, NH who are helping each other install solar thermal panels and solar PV (photovoltaic) panels on their homes. Just as “barn raisers” were neighbors helping each other raise a barn, “energy raisers” are neighbors helping each other install renewable energy systems.
